The former hospital in Modena, Italy, is getting a kinetic canopy, and it's a sight to behold. But what makes this project truly fascinating is the way it blends innovation with preservation. The canopy, designed by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, is a moving roof that opens and closes in front of the building it will eventually transform. What makes this particularly intriguing is the way it challenges our understanding of architecture and design. From my perspective, the project is a testament to the power of dynamic reversibility, a concept that allows for change while preserving the essence of the original structure. The canopy is a perfect example of this, as it can expand and contract, providing shelter when needed while still allowing the historic facades to remain exposed to the sky. One thing that immediately stands out is the use of Corten steel and stainless steel in the construction. The weathered outer frame and the moving assembly create a unique aesthetic that is both modern and timeless. What many people don't realize is that the canopy is just the beginning. The project is part of a larger cultural complex, AGO Modena Fabbriche Culturali, which will feature unfinished halls ready for temporary installations and uses. This approach allows for a degree of openness after construction ends, with the building able to keep changing through occupation. The seven-meter model in Piazza Sant'Agostino is a preview of the full-scale canopy that will eventually move above the triangular courtyard. The model gives AGO a public presence months before its first spaces open, and it's a sight to behold. The structure was digitally fabricated and preassembled before installation, with CRA and Hoberman working alongside Articulated Artworks and Maestro Technologies. The result is a small piece of architecture in its own right, a demonstration of how large structures can expand and contract. In my opinion, the kinetic canopy is a game-changer for urban design.
